Hey guys,
As we discussed at yesterday's practice, on Monday we're going to simulate a match by having the B-Team play the A-Team.
You all, the players, will still be responsible for arriving early to help set up the net, as we'll be expected to do on home match days. After that, there will be a coin toss and a meeting between the Captains/Coaches and the Referee.
I'm trying to find a friend of mine to come-in and "Ref" for us, but I'm not sure how successful I will be at this.
Aside from that, here is the general format of pre-game warm-ups:
~ 15 minutes to jog and stretch as a team.
~ 5 minutes shared court time for pepper/throws/arm warm-ups.
- During this time, the players must make every effort to keep the ball only on their side of the court.
[ Captains meeting with Referee ]
1. 4 minutes solo court time for the visiting team.
2. 4 minutes solo court time for the home team.
3. 4 minutes solo court time for the visiting team.
4. 4 minutes solo court time for the home team.
---
When the opposing team is on the court, players for our team must remain off the court.

The "5-1" Rotation (4-6)
ROTATION 4:
- This is our serve receive for "Rotation 4".
N.B. Again, note the following:
1. The spacial relation between the Setter and the OH, who both share the back row; and the S and the M in the service zone directly ahead of him.
---NET---
- This is our "Rotation 4".
---NET---
- This is our serve receive for "Rotation 4".
N.B. Again, note the following:
1. The spacial relation between the Setter and the OH, who both share the back row; and the S and the M in the service zone directly ahead of him.
2. The spacial relation between the OH and M in front of the 3 meter line.
3. The spacial relation between the front row RS and the OH and M, also in the front row.
ROTATION 5:
---NET---
- This is our "Rotation 5".
---NET---
- This is our serve receive for "Rotation 5".
N.B. Please take a moment and honestly ask yourself the following:
1. Did you understand serve receive in "Rotation 4"?
2. Could you have drawn "Rotation 5" on your own if you were shown serve receive of "Rotation 4"?
3. Do you understand why the players as drawn in "Rotations 4 & 5" are not "out of rotation"? If not, now is the time to go back and review.
4. If review doesn't help, make sure you see me before practice tomorrow.
The "5-1" Rotation (1-3)
ROTATION 1:
- This is our "Rotation 1", we will likely start every game in this rotation.
- This means on our service, the Libero will be the first server.
- In the case of our serve receive to start the game, the setter is the first server.
- This is serve receive for "Rotation 1".
N.B. Front row and back row players must maintain their service order prior to the opposing team server contacting the ball into play.
1. This means the OH must remain between the Middle and the Setter.
2. Players sharing a row do not need to worry about positioning in regards to proximity to the net, only lateral position. e.g. left and right, not backwards and forward.
3. So, above, the position of the players in the front row (M, OH, S) don't matter in regards to whom is closer to the net, or even if they overlap, only that the OH remain between the M & S.
4. Similarly, the back row (RS, OH, L) doesn't need to worry about overlap or proximity to the net, only staying in service order.
- After the ball is put over the net onto the other team's side of the net, all players return to their "home" defense.
ROTATION 2:
- This is our "Rotation 2".
--- NET---
(Sorry about the quality of these scans)
- This is serve receive for "Rotation 2".
- Please note: Whenever the setter moves in front of the 3 meter line for serve receive, he must remain behind the player in the service zone directly in front of the setter's service zone, and to the right or left of the players with whom the setter is sharing the back row.
N.B. In this rotation, rotation 2, the Setter is in service zone 1, so, for serve receive he must remain behind the OH (in zone 2), and to the right of the Libero, until the opposing team server contacts the ball into play.
Service Zones and Base Defense
These are the service zones we discussed last week.
As noted above:
1 - The net is represented by the line at the top of the box;
2 - the "I" is the first server to a side, unless that team is set to receive the serve first.
